L'ébauchoir/ Timber frame all stell chisel

Description

This is a heavy-duty wood chisel made entirely of C70 carbon steel. It is forged from a single piece of metal for maximum strength. Its octagonal handle ensures a secure grip without causing blisters by the end of the day; a round handle would twist in the hand, while a square one would be uncomfortable or painful to use.

More information

It has a total length of 400 mm, and its blade—featuring a precision-ground face—measures 200 mm, making it a solid and reliable companion.

The blade is approximately 7 mm thick, ensuring the necessary rigidity; a thicker blade is actually faster to sharpen, and the tool's weight helps apply pressure against the sharpening stone.

Weighing 1.4 kg (for a 50 mm roughing plane), it possesses significant inertia. You get the same results with less fatigue!

The steel

I forge my roughing chisels from C70 carbon steel, which achieves a hardness of 59 to 60 HRC after heat treatment. It is an easy-to-sharpen, shock-resistant, and durable steel.

Its drawback is its susceptibility to oxidation; care must be taken.

Its precision-ground base is offset relative to the handle, allowing the base to slide right up to the end of the assembly being worked on.

At the forge, I upset the domed area to protect my hand during striking operations.

The side bevels are sufficiently obtuse (60 degrees) to ensure good resilience and allow the tool to slide into the acute angles of joints.

I usually use a 30-degree sharpening angle, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, but this can be adjusted to your preference.

I also craft leather sheaths to protect your cutting edges from the hazards of the job site or workshop.

The sheath is now reinforced with a wooden U-shaped insert and a stainless steel plate to prevent the blade from piercing the leather during storage or in the event of a drop.

Leather sheath : 17,5 euros for one chisel
