Demi Bisaigüe
Description

Also known as a Pontache, mortise axe, or German (or Alsatian) bisaigüe, this is a timber-framing tool that does not rely on striking (percussion). It is used to cut framing joints—such as flitch joints, Jupiter’s cuts, and mortises—or even to shape tenons and pegs.
It is essentially a wood chisel made entirely of C70 carbon steel, featuring a side handle positioned on the left or right, depending on the user's handedness. Its 1.5 kg weight gives it significant momentum, resulting in less fatigue for the same outcome.

The steel
I forge my bisaigües from C70 carbon steel, which achieves a hardness of 59–60 HRC after heat treatment. It is a durable, shock-resistant steel that is easy to sharpen.
Its downside is its susceptibility to oxidation, so it requires care.

Its flat handle, with a cross-section featuring slightly softened edges, ensures a secure grip without causing blisters by the end of the day; if it were round, it would twist in the hand.

Its baseplate is offset towards the handle, allowing it to slide right to the end of the assembly being worked on.
The side bevels are sufficiently obtuse (60 degrees) to ensure good resilience and allow the tool to slide into the acute angles of joints.

I usually use a sharpening angle of 30 degrees, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, though this can be adjusted to your preference.
