Timber framing chisels

Description

The framing chisel, a hybrid between a standard wood chisel and a heavy-duty framing chisel can handle all the tasks typically performed by the latter. Some carpenters prefer it for the feel of its wooden handle and the quieter impact it produces. In contrast, all-steel framing chisels are twice as heavy and tend to be very noisy when struck.

Unlike a tang-style firmer chisel, this tool features a handle—made of ash in this case—and is not designed to withstand heavy hammer blows. However, it offers excellent resistance to mallet strikes and feels more comfortable in the hand.

Its long socket ensures a robust connection between the handle and the blade. The hand can rest on the socket to improve the user's grip on the tool. The chisel is assembled by force-fitting a forged socket into a wooden handle.

This attachment method—combined with riveting and gluing—gives the handle exceptional durability. This process prevents the handle from becoming loose or splitting during heavy-duty work (using a mallet) or due to fluctuations in temperature and humidity.

L'acier :

I forge my framing chisels from C70 carbon steel, which achieves a hardness of 59–60 HRC after heat treatment. It is a steel that is easy to sharpen, impact-resistant, and durable.

Its downside is its susceptibility to oxidation, so care must be taken.

Its 180mm rectified blade is aligned with the handle to maximize force transmission during a strike.

I typically use a 30-degree sharpening angle, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, though this can be adjusted to your preference. The side bevels are set at 60 degrees; this prevents the chisel from binding in the joint while in use.

I also craft leather sheaths reinforced with a stainless steel plate and a wooden U-shaped insert to protect the cutting edge from the hazards of the job site or workshop.
