Bisaigüe

Description

Bisaigüe Bisaigue Forge
Bisaigüe Bisaigue Forge

It is the carpenter's signature tool.

It is a timber-framing tool that does not require striking. It is used to cut joints—such as sandwich joints, traits de Jupiter (scarf joints), and mortises—or even to shape tenons and pegs.

It is a long chisel—essentially a large mortise chisel—made entirely of C70 carbon steel, featuring a side handle positioned for either left- or right-handed use. Weighing between 3.5 and 5 kg, it possesses significant inertia. This means less fatigue for the user, while delivering comparable results!

the steel

I forge my bisaigües from C70 carbon steel, which achieves a hardness of 59–60 HRC after heat treatment. It is a durable, shock-resistant steel that is easy to sharpen. Its downside is its susceptibility to oxidation, so it requires care.

Its oval handle—with a cross-section featuring edges softened by hammer blows—ensures a secure grip without causing blisters by the end of the day. If it were round, it would twist in the hand; if it were square, it would be uncomfortable or painful to hold.

Its baseplate is offset towards the handle, allowing it to slide right to the end of the assembly being worked on.

I usually use a 30-degree sharpening angle, resulting in a razor-sharp edge, but this can be adjusted to your preference.
