The mortise chisel's slightly trapezoidal cross-section prevents it from binding in the mortise during use. Each side is machined at a 1.5-degree angle. This subtle trapezoidal profile—challenging to machine—is a genuine asset for your fine woodworking projects.

The sharpening angle of the mortise chisel is 25 degrees for the principal bevel, then 30 degrees. It comes ready to use with a mirror-polished, razor-sharp edge.

The mortise chisel bar I manufacture is flattened along its entire length—right up to the handle—using a surface grinder.

I use ash wood for mortise chisel handles. It is perfectly suited for a tang-style fitting, as ash is both resilient and flexible.

It strikes an excellent balance between flexibility, hardness, durability, and cost. The wood reveals beautiful grain patterns when finished with Tung oil and is a very popular choice for handles today.

To ensure the chisels hold up well, I fit a steel striking ferrule—2mm thick and 30mm in diameter—to prevent the handle from splitting during use.
